10 amazing facts about Spain

1. Sacked by Real Madrid the day after winning their 29th league title, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque could not even bring himself to sit on the balcony of his apartment – because it overlooked the team's training ground.

2. After getting sent off in the Copa del Rey final, Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez became involved in a row with Cristiano Ronaldo, telling the Real Madrid winger: “Don’t celebrate too much. I’m a World Cup champion and you’re not, you clown.”

4. Iker Casillas’ TV reporter girlfriend Sara Carbonero is claimed to have had a boob job to mark their first anniversary.

5. Spain's goalkeeper is so beloved in Madrid that after victory in the last Euros, locals led a campaign to rename a local road 'The Mother That Gave Birth To Casillas Street'.

6. During the last World Cup, defenders Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul Albiol were seen wearing England shirts in Spain team hotel – a subtle reference to their intra-squad FIFA gaming tournament against Sergio Ramos and Jesús Navas. Said Arbeloa: “They were Spain, we were England and it got pretty intense. We always put Crouch up front – and he scored loads. We bought ourselves England shirts. You'd be there in the Spain hotel and there were two guys in white, 'Gerrard' and 'Crouch' on the back.”

7. Fernando Torres was inspired to become a striker at the age of seven, when Spanish TV started showing Japanese cartoon Captain Tsubasa. It features a kid dubbed “the heaven-sent child of football” after being saved from being run over and killed by a bus when the ball he is carrying absorbs the impact.

8. As children, Xabi Alonso and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta lived three minutes away from each other on the same road in San Sebastian and played for the same team, Antiguoko.

9. Andres Iniesta would have joined Real Madrid as a child but his parents didn’t like the location of their campus for youth players – next to a red-light district.

10. Sergio Ramos’ girlfriend Lara Alvarez once appeared in an MTV commercial advising girls not to have sex before marriage.

10 amazing facts about Italy

1. While England's official Euro 2012 suits are from Marks & Spencer, Italy's are by Dolce & Gabbana.

2. Quiet man Mario Balotelli played in his first major final, for AC Lumezzane juniors, at the age of 11. Recalled Giovanni Vincenzo: “The day before we stressed to the players the importance of good preparation. Mario went straight off, bought a huge ice-cream and licked it before my very eyes.”

3. Andrea Pirlo has his own wine company, based in an old convent near Brescia. Called Pratum Coller, it produces over 40,000 bottles a year.

4. In addition to being arguably the world's best goalkeeper, Gigi Buffon is undoubtedly one of football's most cerebral players. Asked in an interview, "How did you start as a goalkeeper?", he replied: "I entered my present profession by accident - a series of geographical, personal, and legal coincidences. A blend of boredom, curiosity, and vanity."

5. Gonzo-nosed hardman Giorgio Chiellini’s ambition as a youngster was to be an orthopaedic surgeon. He wept on the training pitch after his collision with Fabio Cannavaro ruled the veteran out of Euro 2008.

6. Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio’s wife Roberta supports their deadly rivals Torino, as her dad used to play for their youth team.

7. Italian fans call The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army – whose riff has inspired their favourite chant – “the po po po po po pooo pooo song”

8. Daniele De Rossi warns off opponents with a “beware of being tackled” tattoo on his right calf. Set in a yellow triangle, it shows one stick man sliding in to win the ball from another.

9. Antonio Cassano enjoys Italian croissants after sex – especially when in the team hotel the night before a match. He said of his time at Real Madrid: “I made friends with one of the waiters. His job was to bring me 3 or 4 cornetti after I had sex. He would bring the cornetti to the stairs, I would bring the girl and we would make a trade: he took the girl, I stuffed myself with cornetti. Sex plus food, the perfect night.”

10. Cassano says he told Fabio Capello to “fuck off” at least 20 times during their spell at Roma together. During one bust-up he screamed at the future England coach: “You’re a piece of shit, you’re more fake than Monopoly money”. Don Fabio later coined the phrase ‘Cassanato’, meaning behaviour detrimental to team spirit.

Training wins also. I have 21 trophies. There is blah, blah, blah from you. Fools write who know nothing. Blah, blah, blah, blah. I can understand people paying. No problema. Let whistle. Is right. Have lost. But run 90 minutes! I am a professional in psychology. We train, make fitness. You people always make qua, qua, qua. Shit fools.”
